PHILIP WILLIAMS

Philip works as a painter, in print and with 3D forms. He uses a variety of techniques, painting styles, and non-conventional materials to emphasise the different origin and character of the varied imagery he chooses to evoke in his work.     His recent series of paintings, referred to as “Baroquerie”, explores our attachment and familiarity with Baroque and Rococo art and architecture.

He isolates specific elements of this visual inheritance combining them in compositions that explore the durability of this imagery in contemporary visual culture.   The colour palette of his paintings is extensive, varied and highly saturated and individual paint marks are lush and generously applied.  His paintings are positioned on the cusp of excess reflecting the balance between inventiveness and extravagance characteristic of the Baroque era and inhabit the borderland between representation and abstraction implicit in contemporary painting.

Philip graduated from Central St. Martins art school, London in 2016.   He is the winner of the Hollyport Prize and the Clyde & Co award for graduating artists from London based art schools and has been shortlisted for the Jackson Art Prize and Wells Art Contemporary Award.
