Artist’s Statement:

Toya Walker lives and works in South London and various hilltops in Britain and beyond. A graduate of painting from Edinburgh College of Art her vibrant paintings reflect an interest in the spatial relationships of colour and form and theprofundity that nature inspires. Large spaces are condensed into in small pictures with jewel-like hues. These landscapes are almost always begunin situ, working quickly with changing light and weather conditions. In the studio they are developed with little visual reference beyond the painting itself. In this way a sense of place is captured and then with subsequent reductions and inventionsthe pictures become vivid little pieces of escapism.

Exhibitions have included the Jerwood Drawing Prize, The Mall Galleries Royal Society shows, The Dulwich Picture Gallery summer show, The Alberto Vilar Gallery and the RSA Student Exhibition.
Additionally Toya undertakes portrait and illustration commissions and continues to be involved on a freelance basis with a variety of art education projects. Observational drawing remains a constant source of inspiration and an integral part of her working practice.
