The themes of her work are based around the illusiveness of normality. She is interested in the inherent contradiction in the need to belong to a social structure, but being simultaneously repulsed by it. She creates uncanny photomontages that are invented realities and feeds off the tension and dissonance created by staging mundane moments in life.

She has worked on diverse projects that include motion graphics, animation as well as network branding and fashion photography productions. With varied clients that include Channel 4, Ron Arad Associates, Channel 2 Israel. She has exhibited and featured in publications such as Motionographer, IDn magazine, Computer Arts magazine, Adobe Design Achievement awards, International woman’s film festival and many more.

Noel Clegg began his photographic journey as a traditional landscape photographer, inspired by the beautiful landscapes of the North of England. However, being London based and only able to access these locations on rare occasions, he turned his attention to Kent and Sussex.

This presented Noel with a challenge, as he found the landscape was not as diverse nor provided the splendour that he was initially drawn to. As with most landscape photographers, he is instictively drawn to water and therefore studied the coastline of this area closely. He soon discovered that it had an abundance of manmade structures, which allowed him to create unique, atmospheric and compelling images of subjects that may otherwise go unnoticed or be taken for granted.

Noel will be the first to admit that photography is a journey; he started taking a serious interest in his art in 2008 trying many different styles of photography. In early 2010 he began experimenting with long exposure photography and soon recognised that he could be more creative and produce a visionary piece of fine art from a landscape, rather than simply capturing a moment in time.

Artist’s Statement:

“Though a shotgun may seem a controversial creative instrument it is the method by which many chose to express themselves throughout the world. In the hands of the artist it is used in full knowledge, a process balanced on the edge of the human capacity for creation and destruction”…Georgina Coburn

I used to shoot my ceramics because I wanted people to see the damage a gun can make. This was because I had strong feelings against gun crime and the mess War makes of the lives of innocent people. Families of soldiers and the innocent bystanders, these are the people who are most affected. The dead don’t speak.

Someone shot me in the leg when I was a child and this was what first motivated me to subject my work to the destructive forces of gun-fire. I have never shot a living thing and I have no desire to do so. I chose to shoot my ceramics because of my feelings. Now I shoot my work because I have discovered that during this exploration of emotion and clay, I have developed a huge awareness of the focus required to shoot and how this focus is almost meditative to me. It has also led me to a point where I use my shotgun to produce work that is impossible to recreate in any other way.

I am no longer angry, and am enjoying the developments in the exploration of shooting from different angles and distances, and the effects achievable through subjecting the work to a force that is not directly applied by hand or tool meeting clay. I ask myself whether it is cathartic or learning? Perhaps it is both…the importance to me is the fact that I find self- expression and a purpose to what I do.

The writer and poet, Ian Stephen, said of my shot ceramics “The really strange thing is that the work retains some of the quiet elegance which comes from years of craft. This makes it bearable. So you don’t switch off but look closely…” Comments like this make me realize that what I am doing is appreciated and as long as there is appreciation, I will maintain the drive and passion I have found in this work.

I see my ‘Shotgun’ work as a journey. It sometimes leads me to installation work such as the show I had with American Artist, Ehren Tool, it sometimes leads me to produce quiet forms that have a presence without’ shouting about it’

“The power of Weightman’s art is that it stays with you long after first exposure to the work”, Georgina Coburn.

Diana’s work is hand-made from white earthenware paper clay, which is used in thin textured slabs. These are stretched into pillow and curved forms and made into boxes, dishes, lamps, jewellery and tiles. Using paper clay allows this stretching to take place without tearing, but does mean that dishes are porous and for decorative use only.

The rich colours derive from the slips, shiny glazes and under-glaze colours used. Diana’s interest in textiles, shells, seed-pods and small precious containers such as reliquaries inform and inspire her work. The work is glaze-fired to 1120 degrees in an electric kiln.

I am obsessively fascinated with color, texture, textile design, and form, although most of the images and inspiration I find for art are drawn from my childhood background.

I grew up in the Japanese countryside, near the edge of a pond thriving in bio-diversity. I would spend long summer days collecting all manner of insects, leaves and stones to escape my isolation.

After attending Art University in Kyoto, I moved to New York City in 2001, and was strongly influenced by the urban experience; how metropolitan living tends toward disconnection and results in an existence bereft of intimacy.

Through the making of art, I engage this disconnection: from the community of humankind, and from the natural world.

Working on paper allows me to create different layers of acrylic paint, ink, graphite and oil-pastel; in the overlay of various surfaces and visual effects resulting from this process, I can suggest the passage of time and recollection of memory.

Education

2001 -2007 Studied painting under Sonia Gechtoff, figurative drawing under Costa Vavagiakis, printmaking under William Behnken and Kathy Carraccio at the National Academy of Fine Art, (New York, NY)

2000 Graduated from Kyoto University of Art and Design (Kyoto, Japan)

1998 Studied design art at the Sugii Art institution (Mie, Japan)

1997 Studied general art at the Ito Art Institution (Mie, Japan)
