TOM WILMOTT

"In my work I comment on the little things that interest me - events, objects, places and ideas which, on their own, would be largely inconsequential. I take the things that go unnoticed and by including them in my painting transform them into something that commands attention.

By approaching the insignificant and hoisting it above it's naturally indifferent position I endevour to change it into something greater than that which it would ordinarily have been. I am interested in the secondary existence (the artwork) being of greater value than the primary existence (the subject matter). The documentation or evidence of the subject becoming more important than the subject itself.

My painting is almost exclusively figurative - I find honest, faithful representation the most valuable way of expressing the ideas with which I work. I actively try to avoid choosing naturally beautiful images for my work, or constructing artificial, abstract forms. I feel a far greater achievement in being be able to bestow aesthetic value upon an image of the mundane or unattractive rather than reproducing an already easily appreciable image, or inventing an attractive image that is not bound by the pictorial rules of figuration."
