I studied at St Martin’s College of Art and Wimbledon School of Art in London before moving to the United States in 1979 where I completed an MA at Rhode Island School of Design. Whilst at RISD my main influence was the architecture of the city and in particular New York but later became interested in introducing narrative into figurative painting using a mixture of childhood photographs and magazine cuttings.
The starting point for the current paintings is the video camera and the obvious sense voyeurism I hope adds a little un-easiness, though more akin to being the accidental eves dropper to the mobile phone conversation where your ears rather than eyes observe the patterns and details of people’s lives.
