MARION JONES

I’m a London–based artist and I studied at Camberwell and Chelsea and also have a degree in art history from UEA.

My starting point always relates specifically to form and structure and is at times informed by a close examination of textures and surfaces: liquid on glass, snakeskin, crystalline forms, stitching and stretched fabrics. But as pictures develop it is always the structure that is the most important feature. Raoul De Keyser, Guston, Ryman and David Reed are artists that I keep returning to as a reference.

I am interested in the layering and texture of surfaces; panels which appear raised or embossed on a surface, or by contrast, "trapdoors" to lower layers. The surface however remains smooth and flat. I paint on unprimed canvas and on Khardi paper and the contrast between washed–out and vivid colour is a constant preoccupation.

My current work relates also to more organic forms and seeks to combine my interests in form and structure with literary sources, notably in the works "The Trees of all Ireland", inspired by a passage in Joyce’s Ulysses.
